One of the best ways to get inspired is by checking out examples to help grow your career in business. The CEO of the Vita-Mix Corporation, John Kent Barnard, has been recognized as the Small Business Person of the Year by the Small Business Council of America (SBCA).
Although Vita-Mix has grown to become a worldwide top industry brand, Barnard said that the company still operates on the small business principles it was founded on. Focusing on a company's core strengths and values is easier to accomplish as a small business, but can also be achieved by larger companies that do not allow profits to overshadow customer, supplier, employee and dealer needs. This is a key factor in a company's ability to make the right decisions quickly while maintaining a long-term perspective. Barnard began his career at the family-owned company demonstrating Vita-Mix machines, and worked in a number of large public manufacturing companies before returning to Vita-Mix in 1981.
