For some science majors, career planning is motivational, but for others it is intimidating. In moving from a graduate degree or postdoc to a job in industry, many get stuck when they encounter rejection by companies that are seeking more experience for even entry level jobs as a career builder.
There are two major obstacles that many science graduates face in their career search. The first is that they do not develop a direct path to their career of choice which can be followed one step at a time. Academic scientists need to work on actively building a bridge between the work they do in academia and what they are looking for in industry. Once they do get some industry experience, scientists can advance by developing a network of contacts withing their company and industry, and ask them about jobs. Volunteering to assist on special projects and showing interest in their work is a good way to advance into higher positions.
